From the late 1980’s Motorbike manufacturers started to change over from steel lined cylinders toNikasil coating. Nikasil is a Silicon Carbide Composite coating which wears with piston motion over time. A standard sized cylinder generally uses an A size piston, most piston brands are available in A, B, C sometimes D and E. Each size is .01mm larger which takes up the slack caused by wear on the cylinder. It is recommended to check the size of your cylinder with each piston change or top end rebuild to make sure the correct size of piston is fitted. Fitting to large a piston can result in seizures, fitting too small a piston can result in lack of compression and noisy pistons.

F1moto offers a measuring service which is free with every purchase of our Top End Rebuild kits. You can either make an appointment to bring your cylinder in or post it to us to measure. Your cylinder will then be returned with the Top End Rebuild and matched piston kit.

Depending on whether you cylinder is Steel Lined or Nikasil Coated. Nikasil Coated cylinders can be stripped and recondition providing the cylinder itself is not damaged on the ports or water jackets. In some instances cracks can be repaired but we would need to see the cylinder to evaluate it before sending it for reconditioning. Steel Lined cylinders can be rebored providing there are pistons available in larger sizes.

We have a few models of cylinders on the shelf already reconditioned and ready to fit. These are sold on an exchange basis.  This means we will need your old cylinder in exchange for the reconditioned one.

We generally have available
